Episode 7 - Online Success

The high school drop out rate in America is a national disgrace. The U.S., which once had some of the highest graduation rates in the world, now ranks 22nd out of 27 developed countries.

The social costs associated with high school drop outs are indisputable, ranging from increased poverty rates and lower financial earning power, to increased likelihood of committing a crime for those who fail to complete high school.

Some people react to overwhelming challenges such as these with a “chicken little” response, choosing to focus only on the problem and threats, while their only actions are repeated proclamations of doom.

Then, there are others who blow past what is wrong and not working—choosing instead to focus on possibilities and solutions.

This week’s Core Dialogues Radio guest, Dr. Howard Liebman, definitely falls in the second group of individuals. As the Co-Founder & Superintendent of Schools for Smart Horizons Career Online Education, Howard and his team are taking on the challenge to provide solutions to America’s drop out epidemic.

Smart Horizons is the world’s first fully Advanced/SACS/NCA accredited online school district. The organization provides a vehicle to attain a high school diploma for people who have aged out of opportunities available in the traditional school system. The average age of Smart Horizons students is 29.
